Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August. It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultimate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of Earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like The Earth has 2 Moons. Don't Miss it..... The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

Nope -- Mars does not come to opposition this year. It's almost on the far side of its orbit as seen from Earth. You may see it low in the west just after sunset, about 30 degrees east of the sun. Its brightness is about comparable to Polaris and it is being outshone by about two dozen stars. When Mars is at opposition it is much brighter than it is now -- sometimes brighter than any star.

No. It keeps circulating around the internet, but the event was in 2003:

However, Earth and Mars make regular close approaches to each other every couple of years (I *think* the frequency is about every 18 months).
