I mean lets say you've never seen a movie before but its one of those value movies that costs like 7.50 or 9.99.
Would it be smarter to buy or rent?
I mean think about it:
if you rent it, thats like $4 right there or more, and if you buy it, its just like $4 more.
If you hate it, you only spent like 10 bucks, but if you love it thats the benefit. I mean 'cuz then after you rented it and loved it then you'd want to buy it which is adding money to the cost that you spent on that one movie.
So in your opinion is it wise just to buy movies instead of rent them?
I just bought "Sleepy Hollow" and I loved it, so now for $7.50 its mine forever. Whereas if i would have rented it and then bought it, it would be like a total of like $13 or something.

I don't care about what to do. I know what to do about this. I just buy my movies. I'm interested to see what everyone else does. This is strictly an opinion question.

I think we should buy, but doing a little research about the film first.

I prefer buying to renting but there comes a time when you have to find a new place to live because your collection has exceeeded your living space. The question is how often will you watch that particular video. The tendency is to get hooked on an actor or a series and buy all of those discs whether you like them or not. That is the quickest way to run out of space. Pretty soon you are ordering slim cases on line and building shelves everywhere you can. It gets obsessive. Besides , you can get one of those rental plans for $20 a month and wach thirty or fourty movies if you have the time. It's up to you. Just be careful how many you buy.

There's definitely a point where it's cheaper to buy movies so you'll have them forever, and there's definitely a point where it only makes sense to rent it once to see if you'll like it. The question is, how much hope do you have to have for a movie before you're willing to buy it?
I for one rarely buy movies but I just ordered three of my favorites (Equilibrium, Waking Life and Clerks) off Amazon, since I know I'd be watching those all the time and they'd quickly pay for themselves in rental costs.

I have a problem with spending- esp books, cds and movies. So I just don't buy movies at all. If I buy one, pretty soon I've already spent hundreds of $$ on a movie collection most of them I will view only a couple of times at most. I prefer renting now cause it also reduces the clutter around my place.

Or with Netflix and blockbuster online offering free trials, you could watch it for free and then cancel the service. And every 3 months they give you a month free to try and regain your membership, at which point you do the same. Then if you really like the movie, you can always go out and buy it at the cost at the store.

Personally I like to rent online cause it comes in the mail, and we don't like to watch the same movie more than once, unless its really good.
But, for most people, it makes more sense to buy since they don't cost much more than renting.

I dislike more movies than I like AND I hardly ever watch a movie more than once. If I truly love a movie I don't feel bad about spending $4 plus $10more.

Best answer is to buy it used or on the discount bin. Never buy a new movie for full price. Check eBay or half.com or any other used media site to try to find it at a lower price.

I'm a firm believer that most movies should be seen in a theatre. They're made to be a grand production; you are more immersed in the reality in a theatre than watching it at home.
