This is because liberals - and I include some of those who have answered here - like the idea of having different segments of society speaking different languages. It's easier to segregate and control people (by playing one group off of another) that way. Making America a multi-language country is part of multi-culturalism (which is just warmed over separate-but-equal crap, in my opinion). Remember Ebonics - liberals loved that idea - they'd just love to have black people speaking a different language.

Language differences separate people - having a common language helps unite people. In a perfect world everyone could speak every language there is - and there's certainly nothing wrong with people learning more than one (I speak, read, and write three), but a common language is essential to a common culture, and a common culture is essential to strong country.

the wuestions should be why are we even wasting time on this on the senate floor. i think our politicians spend too much time debating issues that are not a priority to most americans. i would rather have a debate on the war in iraq, healh care, wiretapping, education, then flag burning or the official language. that is what is wrong with some voters they dont pay attention to the real issue. we all know english is the dominant language in america, why spend time on the senate floor over it.

America is not an 'english' country. England and Great Britain is. America is a melting pot of different Europeans, Africans, Latins, Spanish, and not the least Indians. Therefore, if there is going to be an official language it should be the majority peoples' language. Get out your spanish dictionary and stop being a racist.

As someone who speaks both english and spanish, I cannot believe these ******* did this to us. It is just one more tool in our efforts to stem the tide of illegal immigration. Oh wait, the libs need illegals to get here so they can vote them into power since actual citizens are finally figuring out that the dems are only concerned with money and power and don't care a fig about the little people. At least the republicans are honest about it.

because it wasn't the only issue contained in the law. now and again they vote for or adverse to a bill that they only agree/disagree with 80%. It relies upon which issue interior of a bill is the biggest for them.

why we need an official language ?

cuz we are made up of many cultures. we need one language to unite us.

canada almost went through civil division between english and french speaking provinces.

expanding your horizons by learning as many languages as you can is fine. i wish i knew more than a little bit of Spanglish, but there is such as thing as national pride. an established official language in no way stops freedom of speech.
