from my husband and I. We recently went thru the courts to get the property back from last renters who would not pay. We have some repairs to do that will take at least 3-4 weeks, due to our schedules. Anyway, he and his girlfriend really want to rent the house, and ask about it all the time. My co-worker is black and his girlfriend is white. I don't care. He asked me if the small town this house is located in was prejudiced. I said I didn't think so. Since then, I have found out that there are several idiots in this town that hate blacks and have been known to make asses of themselves. What should I say to my co-worker? I don't want to mislead him, and I don't want him to have problems.

Say nothing. Anything you do to discourage him from renting your house because of his race may be against state and federal law. He knows he's black and he knows some people in the world are racist. And that's all he needs to know.

By all means, rent the house to him if you think he'd be able to pay the rent. Also, F your racist neighbors. F them right in the ear.

Well, first, if you are renting this property to the public, there isn't anything you can do unless you want a civil liberties discrimination lawsuit. And even though you say it doesn't matter, it must or you wouldn't have even mentioned their colors. Plus, you seem to have expected the people in this location as being racist. I think that if you really wanted to rent it to him, you would have been more prompt with the repairs. Have you signed a contract for rental with him? If not, I recommend that you tell him the property is no longer available for rent and it won't be until the repairs are made. Then you can rent it to some nice white folks and you'll be popular in your little white town.

As an Afro-American I would ask you not to rent to your co-worker. It's that it could cause all types of problems with you at work should something goes crazy. I'm not saying this person and his girlfriend aren't reliable; I'm only indicating that sometimes renters are not. In regards to the village idiots; well this is still American and we can't hide from people who have issues on race or mix dating. You're not his mother and I'm sure he can handle his own. However; if you choose to rent to your co-worker have rules and guidelines established prior to a final decision. That way all parties are aware of what's expected.

Just explain it to him. It is better that he makes his decision based on facts. I'm sure this co-worker is used to seeing "asses" in regards to race. Let him make the decision.

Then you need to be honest and tell him to go check out the neighborhood for himself so he can see that you are not lying.

Tell him the truth upfront- he would prob. appreciate it- I know I would.

Then let them make up their own minds about it.

Good luck
