There are a lot of beautiful thing to see in Romania, besides the orphans and Ceausescu. And Nadia Comaneci is not our only ambassador in the world. And as far as Romanians living in creepy castles and being vampires or ware wolfs is concerned...

I hope you enjoy!

Din pacate nu vei gasi pe nimeni care sa stie despre noi mai mult decat Nadia Comaneci, Dracula (nici macar nu Vlad Tepes) sau Hagi. Ar fi timpul sa mai vada si altceva!

Romania is a truely beautiful country. It is like stepping back into my Grandmother's childhood. The people, are generally, very hospitable and very giving. One thing to be advised about....never go out without a roll of toilet paper, some wet wipes to clean your hands and a bottle of filtered water in your pack. Never drink tap water. Get used to outhouses. The markets are fascinating. You will find chicken running around in the main street. You will have to share the road with ox and horse drawn carts. You will have to rent your care in Hungary, because the only cars in Romania is the Dacia (you will be under the hood at least once a week, but the things average between 300,000 and 400,000 kilometers each. It is a very poor country, but the people and landscape could not be more beautiful. If you ever get the chance to go, take it.

* Former Communist country in south-east Europe.

* Capital city Bucharest, largest city in eastern Europe.

* Includes the region of Transylvannia, supposed home of Count Dracula

* Ruled for 24 years by the despotic Ceaucescus who tried to create some kind of agrarian paradise but failed miserably

* The said Ceaucescus were overthrown by a bloody and violent revolution over Christmas 1989. What started off as protests in the provincial city of Timosoara soon spread right the way across the country in a matter of days.

* Two days before Christmas, fierce street battles broke out between a mutinying Romanian army and the feared 'Securitate' the secret police of Nicolae Ceaucescu. The hated dictator fled by helicopter, but was captured, put on trial, and executed.

* Since the revolution, Bucharest has become an ethnically diverse city including communities of Africans, Arabs, Pakistanis and Chinese.

* Had a talented football team during the 1990's, with Georghi Hagi ('Maradona of the Carpathians') pulling the strings. Three times they reached the knock-out stages of the World Cup, and twice lost on penalties (to Ireland in 1990, and Sweden in 1994). They also lost 1-0 to Balkan rivals Croatia in 1998, also to a penalty taken by Davor Suker. Their moment of glory came in the last 16 round of USA 94' with a 3-2 win over former Champions Argentina.

* The suffix -escu often denotes a Romanian name.

* Famous musicians include Georghe Zamfir, the Cheeky Girls, and (I believe) Michael Cretu producer behind world music act 'Enigma.'

* Romanian is spoken (logically) in Romania and in western regions of neighbouring Moldova.

My aunt and uncle adopted a little girl from Romania a few years ago. They were out there and they saw what a terrible life she had, her family basically had no money what so ever. Her mother gave her daughter to my aunt n uncle because she wanted a better life for her and didn't want her to resort to prostitution when she was older for money like her eldest sister did (who was only in her early teens). Today, my cousin has a great life, she couldn't even speak the language when she first arrived but is now top of her class in English. Just shows you what anyone can achieve.

I had the pleasure of working with a gang of Romanians for the last 3 years and they worked twice as hard and longer hours than the Brits they worked alongside. They liked a party and were very generous, at my leaving do one bought bottles of champagne to share amongst the guests.
What do you know about them?

Roumania is always dark and misty. It has many strange forrest's and eerie castles. The people and are mostly either vampires or ware-wolves. Some who are not live in small backward villages with cosy taverns and are terrified of strangers and the dark.
Hope this helps.

The birth place of the Romany Gypsy, now settled over Europe and being unsettled by the Irish Travellers. It seems now, a lot of them coming to the UK are criminals, women as much as men.
