Thats right go to sleep on the problem, the subconsciuos mind processes most when at rest. Don;t be surprised of you find yourself opening your eyes at between 3 and 4 am for a few second to check the time and going back to sleep either!
Here is how to do it:
In your mind have a conversation:- "I will wake up tomorrow fully refrshed with the knowledge I need to help me". repeat in your mind until you go to sleep, or forget to keep doing it, thats ok too.
Failing that, try meditation, and let you mind be clear of noise and chatter. The answer will come to you, sometimes when you least expect it.
Happy dreaming!

Asking questions before sleep MIGHT stir a response through a dream, but there are other methods to use as well. Try the Jungian practise of "active imagination." This is almost like conscious lucid dreaming. Also, the Tarot or I Ching are both tools that may be used for this purpose. You can also try writing down questions on paper with your dominant hand, and then writing down answers with your nondominant hand. You may be surprised what comes out.

When you get up in the morning, jot down as many details as you can from your dreams before they fade. Remember small details like colours as well as the major events. Then use a book or website to help you analyse each symbol in your dreams. It can be a little time consuming, but it's worth it.
When you have analysed each individual component, consider them as a whole. Your brain will be telling you something that may or may not clarify your attitudes in life, or indicate a way to go for you. Some dreams are very literal and do not need interpretation, but jotting them down as you wake will help you consciously sort them.
Most Dream Interpretation books are similar - I have a good few. Any will be fine, or try http://www.dreammoods.com/dreamdictionary/
Enjoy!

Go to the library and read a few books on the symbolism of dreams. Also, understand birth order. Only you, or a really good psycho-analyist can understand what you are trying to tell yourself. When you have a dream, write it down in as much detail as you can even if it means getting up in the dead of night right after you dream it! You really can learn a lot about your own behavior and misconceptions by exploring your dreams.

Answers are not automatically 'the answers' to problems. It's important to understand what your questions are - what it is they are they are about.
Recognition of the right questions can be an important guide to knowing what it is really going on within the Self.
A useful book is a copy of the 'I Ching.'
I have an American edition somewhere, whose translation is very good, but I can't remember the name of the writer. Sorry.
It does tend to act as a series of signposts for the user of it.
Regards.

Use a dowsing crystal. If you let a pendulum swing freely from your thumb and fore-finger, and ask it to show you different answers for yes and no, it will swing in different directions. Ask it a question with a yes or no answer and it will swing in the direction of your gut instinct.
I am not joking. It works.

try staying awake for a few days and you get some pretty funky answers from your subconscious.
