Depends. Some of them (like any other human being) can actually be good role models but 99% aren't.
I'm going to use for example, Fabio Cannavaro and Zinedine Zidane. Zidane has a lot of kids who look up to him and he reacts violently on an internationally televised match.
Fabio Cannavaro is one of those in public eye (well, maybe not so much in the US) who understands thats in the public eye you have to set an example. In a written statement to FARE (Football Against Racism in Europe) he writes “We know we have a large responsibility, especially with regard to the very young, who from a cultural point of view are particularly impressionable and forever in search of role models whom they can aspire to emulate. We must therefore avoid any form of discriminatory behaviour, not only on the pitch, but also and especially in our daily lives, so that everyone comes to understand that there can be no differences on account of race, skin colour or religion.”
When people in public eye make an effort to live as a decent human being and set forth a good example to the people who see them, then yes, they can be considered a good role model.

NO. Their only talent is acting (or singing, or whatever) They certainly have no more intellectual capabilities than the rest of us. Most of them can't even hold a relationship together. I don't idolize any of them. The only reason anybody would idolize them is because they have a lifestyle and more $$ than most of us will ever have.

If the celebrities (or sports players) do something worth while, care for the sick and dying, feed the starving, help rebuild areas that have been destroyed.. maybe then, yes.
But to pay that much honor to them merely because of how they are in their 'job,' no. UNLESS, it's a teacher.. policeman, etc.

no, they just got real lucky to be in the line of work that they do. I don't think any people should be idols because we all mess up

no, something is wrong with our society to put so much emphasis on them. They are normal people and most of them are scumbags! They get paid way too much, average people have to work so hard just to get a tenth of what those people make, it's messed up!

Whatever it takes to make one person feel and do better for themselves I'm all for. i myself don't think that any celebrity or athlete should be paid for what little they do...I think our teachers and military should be the most paid jobs around...

i dont think so. just because more people know their names and they get more money than the average people doesnt mean they should be role models for any of us today
