Just wondering what people thought of this name... its very popular in the US I am told and although it originated in the UK not many people have heard of it. Have you? What do you think of it? Would you like to know someone with this name? How would you choose to abbreviate it? Clay Clayt etc..?

I have heard it. it sounds sort of hick-ish if you use the full name, but i would like it a lot if it were abbreviated as clay... i love the name clay. i do know someone named clay and clayton.. they are both very nice, but the guy named clay is a really nice guy and he's pretty cool and gentle

Clayton is a sharp and classy name. I would not abbreviate it, it loses it's strength if shortened. If you want to shorten the name then name the child Clay, etc., to begin with.

Hrm, reminds me of the teacher in Back to the Future 3: Clara Clayton and Clayton Ravine. Otherwise I feel that it has an "old timey" quality to it -- it means: "Town on Clay Land".

I think it's a lovely name. It is a stong name but does is ring well with his surname?

I think to shorten it 'Clay' would be nice as others have said. I was going to suggest 'Ayton' as a shorter name but you'd get idiots asking ' ave you aten today' laugh
