Over 50% of the people currently within the federal prison system are there for drug violations. Of those people, 77,000 are there on marijuana convictions. That is 77, 000 non-violent criminals that are taking up space that could be used for rapists, murderers, pedophiles, or kidnappers. Instead the tax payers are placing these non-violent people in prison, and at the same time exposing them to more violent criminals. From this exposure, many criminals become "institutionalized," meaning they get used to prison life more than freedom. So much so, that they become repeat offenders, usually for more violent crimes than what they initially went to prison for, marijuana. It all comes down to the fact that marijuana is a plant. Unlike any other drug, aside from mushrooms or peyote, it does not need to be processed. It grows naturally. How can the government make something illegal that grows naturally. I say, if no one else is getting hurt because somebody else smokes marijuana, then leave them alone. IT IS A PLANT!!!

the prisons are too full already with non-voilent, happy people with the munchies.

There are children with no mother because the mom turned to marijuana to relieve chronic pain that hindered her ability to care for her children. When she smoked only a small amount (not even enough to get high) the pain would go away and she could then interact with her children once again. But, because it was illegal, she went to prison.

Also, look bad at prohibition.....did we not learn anything from that? No matter what you make illegal, people will still want it and get it. It will just raise the price of it.

If drugs were legal, gangbangers would be too poor to afford the weapons they currently have. They would just be hoolums running around with baseball bats.

How much money does our government spend on the "war against drugs"? How many officers will have to die to get rid of a plant?

The only reason it isn't legalized is to perpetuate government control over our actions. Who wants to live in a society where activities that do not harm others (there has never been a case of weed causing a death OR causing others to act violently) are illegal? From a sheer danger point, alcohol is MUCH more deadly and violent than weed. Plus, the amount of revenue the government to garner by taxing something that many Americans do anyway would help the burden on all of us.

Only potheads want marijuana to be legalized for recreational use.

The marijuana of our current day and age is a lot more potent than that of the 60's and 70's. It's not harmless to the user (the harm to the lungs is greater than cigarette smoke because, unlike cigarettes, marijuana smoke is not filtered) and it's not harmless to others-- especially if someone decides to do something like drive while stoned.

I'm not worried. It will never be legalized.

Well, first off, lots of studies have shown that it's not as harmful as they teach you in DARE. It's less addictive than cigarettes and alcohol. Most users are not criminals. Meth addicts and coke heads steal stuff to sell for drugs. They are a real danger to society. On the other hand, people who only use Pot generally are not criminals (except for smoking Pot!). In fact, they usually are pretty laid back. They're not robbing banks or kidnapping celebrities children.

Plus, the government could make a huge profit from the taxes. Everyone does it anyways, why not create some revenue from it? Right now, gangsters and outlaws are the only ones profiting from it.

On the subject of Medical Marijuana, if someone is going to die from Aids, why not try to comfort them somewhat by letting them smoke it in their own house? It's not hurting anyone, and if it makes them feel just a little bit better, it's worth it, in my eyes.

Because they want to be able to smoke weed and get high without having to worry about getting busted. It's basically the liberals being their usual spoiled-six-year-old selves demanding that the world revolve around them and their totally amoral and unethical ways. P.S.: Cigarettes should be banned too, but they won't because the tobacco companies have deep pockets that they use to pay off politicians in order to keep them from passing legislation to ban tobacco.

Probably because it is no more harmful than alcohol. And if it were legalized, the police would not have to waste their time busting some guy smoking it on his back porch and not bothering anyone, and so they would have more time to go after the real criminals (rapists, murderers, etc)

Marijuana is no more dangerous than alcohol. It hurts no one but the user. I think a better question is, "Why is marijuana illegal when alcohol is not?"

And, as far as your feelings on cigarettes, I assume that you feel this way because you believe that second-hand smoke is dangerous. PLEASE read the article below from WebMD. The dangers have been exaggerated on an astronomical level.

Because they're potheads. Although I respect the argument and agree with it in premise, the only hard-core proponents of legalization are stoning losers.

Have them pee in a cup and you'll see!

I think drinking and smoking are trashy behaviors, also and I prefer not add to the list of substances for people to use to annoy me and destroy lives.
