I know someone selling one for about $8,000. Is it a good first car to have?

audi = expensive VW

i would go a little cheaper if its my first car. chances are your going to reck it, or just beat the h*ll out of it, either way this isnt the car for you.

I am in the UK.

Basically the Audi A6 is a VW Passat. Parts easy to obtain even in the states. VW are renowned for reliablity and long life. If the car hasnt got a service history then check carefully. If you buy spend some more dollars on an oil change, air filter, oil filter and new spark plugs. About $100, well worth it.

You can look it up in Consumer Reports. It wouldn't be my first choice in a used car because they ARE expensive to maintain, and there aren't that many technicians that know how to fix them.
