You should see a doctor to get this checked out. However, it may simply be a sebaceous cyst, which is a little bump you can get on various parts of your body that is usually created by a swollen hair follicle or skin trauma. It's a small sac filled with a "pasty" looking substance that may smell kinda funky. If this is what it is, it will probably go away by itself. Sebaceous cysts can sometimes become inflamed or tender, though, so if it started out not hurting and now it IS hurting, you may have an infection in the cyst that requires medical treatment.
So, it's most likely totally harmless -- sebaceous cysts are not uncommon in the vaginal area. However, I wouldn't gamble -- just go see your doc. Trust me -- your doctor has seen things far, FAR more embarassing than this!!

It could be an infected glands, a cyst, a wart or a tumor. You need to get it checked by a doctor ASAP. It is probably nothing to worry about because most cysts are benign and need no treatment. If it is an infected gland, which are very uncommon, a simple operation to empty the contents and heal may be needed. If it is a wart, you may have to have to have it burned, cut or frozen off under anesthia. Viral warts on the vagina are passed on during sex. Check your partner, if applicable. It is most unlikely a cancerous tumor. A vaginal cancerous tumor usually occurs in elderly women. Don't let vanity stand between you and your health. Get this handled sooner rather than later.

meg's right--it sounds exactly like a cyst. they're common in the area and are called bartholin cysts...when the bartholin (lubricant) glands get plugged, there ya go. you can try sitz baths, warm compresses, or, if it is just to painful to wait you can get it cut out (they give a local anesthetic and remove the core and all's well). don't be embarrassed--a lot more people get them than you'd think and some come in with them pretty huge! and to relieve your mind, no it's not necessarily because you don't keep clean enough down there and the doctors know this.

I have had one of them awhile back. Not comfortable at all. I believed it was either a boil(infection) or ingrown hair. I put some antibiotic cream on it for about 4 days and it went away without any other problems.

it is most likely a blocked pore (or cyst), which is similar to a pimple. these are fairly common and not harmful. these usually go away on their own, but can get infected. if they get painful, you should definitely go to the gynecologist and have them looked at.
there is also the scary possibility of herpes or genital warts. how to know?
herpes lesions are painful itchy blisters that eventually burst and form an oozing shallow sore.
genital warts might have a cauliflower surface on top, or might be white on top. they are not usually painful.

do you shave? It could just be an ingrown hair.
Have you had unprotected sex within the last 2 months? See a doctor.

It could be a cyst, i've had one down there. Try warm compresses and neosporin for a few days, if not go to the doctor. Don't mess with what you have down there.

Go to your Gynecologist, it may be embarrassing, but that is what they deal with on a regular basis so it is nothing new to them. They are the only ones that will be able to give you a definite answer.

If it is on the pubic hair area it could be an ingrown hair. If it is in the crease where your leg is, it could be that you wear your undies too tight.
