i wrote a rent check to my landlord and it never got to him. i mailed it so somehow it was into the wrong hands. and they added a hyphen and put an additional last name on the check then took it to a store where i guess they dont id. my question is will i still have to loose this amount of the check or will the bank write it off or will the store that cashed this check be responsible. anyone know????

A stop payment won't do any good if it was cashed. You and the person to whom you wrote the check will likely have to fill out an affidavit saying that the check was never received by its intended recipient. The check was altered (which is a crime) and the store bears the responsibility since it cashed the check. Talk to a manager at your local bank branch.

Once you do your part, the check will be returned to the store as fraudulent and it will be their responsibility to collect on the fraud.

you are absolutely not responsible
go to the bank and fill out an affidavit of fraud you will also need to call the police and report it

you will need to press charges on the scumbag if they ever catch them
and you will need to get a new check to the landlord
dont feel bad for the store it is there fault for not "id"ing they will learn
while your at the police get an accident report on your car for the idiot tow truck driver

I would take this matter up with the manager of the bank. If you've been a customer for a certain length of time and this isn't a repeat incident, they should refund your money. It may require some paperwork and time but keep at it.

Call your bank and put a stop payment on the check.
