Hezbollah started out as a resistance movement, just as they continue to call themselves, in 1982, when Israel invaded Lebanon to fight Palestinian militias there. Hezbollah received backing from Iran and dedicated themselves to fighting the Israelis in Lebanon until the Israelis withdrew from Lebanon in 2000. As the only military force that ever beat Israel, Hezbollah received a lot of admiration and gained popularity in the Arab street. As to why the Arabs would want to beat Israel, see my answer to "basically, what is the beef between the Arabs and Israel?" At that point, between 1982 and 2000, to call Hezbollah a terrorist organization would have been totally disingenuous. They were fighting military troops who occupied their land.
Israel probably never liked the fact the Hezbollah bled and defeated its mighty Tsahal.
After the year 2000, Hezbollah should have surrendered its weapons to the Lebanese Army. Lebanon did not want any para-military group left in the country, for fear it would destabilize the Democratic process. Syria, however, who always had influence in Lebanon, permitted Hezbollah to continue operating and arming itself. Lebanese officials as well as prominent Lebanese journalists have protested against Syrian influence in their country. They were systematically assasinated.
Hezbollah, thus, continued to grow into a powerful military and social organization, a sort of a government within a government. And it continued attacking Israel, both military and civilian positions. Hezbollah claims that it is at war with Israel because there is still Lebanese land occupied by Israel. That's a thin cover for their continued military activiies against Israel. That land is disputed between Syria and Lebanon, and actually neither country cares too much about it.
For this latest incident, where Hezbollah infiltrated Israel and kidnapped two Israeli soldiers, Hezbollah claims that it was to have a bargaining chip to swap Lebanese hostages held in Israeli jails. Those Lebanese hostages, according to Hezbollah, were arbitrarily kidnapped and jailed without a trial.
Israel claims that the Lebanese it holds in its jails are convicted terrorists.
Terrorism. According to Webster's, "use of force or threats to demoralize, intimidate and subjugate...esp such use as a political weapon."
I'd say, that makes a lot of people terrorists.
Israel now has waged mighty war against Lebanon to not only liberate the kidnapped soldiers but also, according to Israel itself, to annihilate Hezbollah. Israel is tired of having its northern towns subjected to rocket shelling here and there (let's keep proportion in mind, not only who starts things). It is also thinking that it's about time they took on Hezbollah. A resolution passed by the UN in 2002 (or was it 2004?), resolution # 1559, required the demilitarization of Hezbollah. That never happened, despite the wish of the majority of the Lebanese, because of Syria. See above. Syria uses Hezbollah as a proxy against Israel.
About 70% of the Lebanese really would rather be rid of Hezbollah, and would rather not have any fights with Israel. There is nonetheless a significant proportion of the Lebanese who always supported Hezbollah, the remaining 30%, and Hezbollah democratically won two seats in the government of Lebanon.
It is unknown, however, whether the recent fighting has made Hezbollah less or more popular in Lebanon, depending on whether you look at what triggered the fighting, or at how lop-sided and indiscriminate Israel's response has been.
Iran still bankrolls Hezbollah. Just to make sure I don't leave them out.
Whether Hezbollah has openely declared that it wishes to destroy Israel or not, I am not sure. We know Iran, its sponsor has. It is also a known fact in the Middle East that many Arabs, some through their official governments, some not (as is the case in Egypt, which recognized Israel), do not recognize Israel's right to exist. Obviously, Israel would have an issue with that.
Someone here said, "Hamas even came and said as much," meaning said out loud that Israel has no right to exist. Hello?! Israel was created where Palestine already existed. Why would you end your argument at Hamas even came out and said as much? You do need to support your argument that "just saying as much" makes someone evil. It is not blasphemy, for millions of people and they are nor only Arab, to say that Israel has no right to exist. We have a memory. We are informed, and not by Fox News, by having lived the reality on the ground. Note that the pro-American Arab countries, and even those that made peace with Israel, never conceded those words "the right to exist." Instead, it is "we recognize Israel." Israel is De Facto now. But it did not earn any of that right by honest means.
It is here to stay, but people like Hezbollah do not accept that. They will fight until the last Lebanese alive. They have hijacked the country, because they refuse to give in to the reality of Israel, and think that, even if it might take a hundred years, they will "liberate" Palestine.
Whether Israel fights only to defend itself against those who want it (for legitimate or not so reasons) destroyed or whether it fights because it is still after more expansion and more power is unknown.
Today, most countries feel that Israel's warring in Lebanon is way out of proportion. Israel has bombarded Lebanese troops, even as it calls for the Lebanese Army to take control of Lebanon. It has bombarded the country's infrastructure to the Middle Ages, way beyond what is required to stop Hezbollah movements. For example, it keeps bombing the airport, which cost the Lebanese millions and has only recently been fully rebuilt after the civil war, even though the airport became inoperable since day one of this war. It has bombarded many civilian areas, where there cannot possibly be Hezbollah elements, as they are traditional Christian strongholds. It has bombarded trucks carrying medical help coming from the United Arab Emirates. It has bombarded dairy farms.
At best, you might say they don't want to take any chances. I would not even buy that. The "baby" when not Jewish, is less human. He can go out with the bath water.
As many Born-Again Christians believe, some of the more religious Israelis also believe that Israel should expand and become even more powerful that it is today. Neighboring countries should not even compete with Israel.
So here we are. Hezbollah wants to fight and liberate the Lebanese and the Palestinians. Israel wants to destroy Hezbollah and, as Israel's Prime Minister said "take Lebanon back twenty years." More like 50 years so far, and at least 300 dead, 250 of whom civilians, and 500,000 displaced from their homes, and $6 billion in damages. Israel conducts 50 airstrikes a day over Lebanon, each strike drops countless of bombs.
I believe you have all seen the terrorized Israelis because about 100 rockets are falling per day in Northern Israel. There have been about 50 Israelis dead.

Israel wants to rule the whole entire region at some point in the future. They don't want any armies other than theirs to have any strength. The Hezbollah has quite a strong army, it seems, in terms of size and training and some weapons.

The main argument is that the Hezbollah do not like that the Israelis are breathing. This of course the Israelis vehemently disagree with the Hezbollah on this issue and wish to keep breathing.

incorrect. They majority of Lebanon tolerate Hezbollah as area of the authorities, formally! They settle for and renowned a 17 November of their midst. Sorry, no better hiding behind the skirts of usa states putting forward, "you could't contact me because this usa did not attack you, I did! you could't invade because they did not do it." That lasts almost 5 seconds before the invasion comes, now adays. We no longer tolerate the shell sport. each and each and every time someone aids in transferring the squaddies, Israel follows the route. in the journey that they lead them into Lebanon, they bypass into Lebanon. you pick to end this? one way: provide decrease back the squaddies. Then they are going to bypass living house. you should appreciate, many Islamic human beings, living lower than dictatorship and consistent propaganda, are very wondered about free international places. they imagine we are weak and stupid because they have always been taught that they are more desirable. Then the have some thing like the attack on Iraq, and their generals are stuck telling the troops how the U.S. and allies have become killed everywhere yet Iraq is triumphing, each and each and every of the even as Saddam is hiding in a hollow. you could't benefit skill and foster lies. Islam will fall, or reform with out it is desire for conquest. The Lebanese celebrated contained in the streets even as 9/11 occurred. we've the video tape, we've the recordings from Islamic stations. we is purely no longer fooled back. both take out the terrorists on your midst, or we can.
