usually no, but some boroughs or cities require you to have a permit in order to do so.

well technically if you're on someone's property without permission, you're trespassing, and that's illegal. However, people put flyers on residential doors all the time, so I don't think it's a big deal. Don't do it if people have a no soliciting sign posted, though.

This also varies on a town-by-town basis. In most major cities you can leave leaflets at houses (this is called soliciting) by putting them in the door, in door mail slots, in the porch railing, etc. Some smaller towns have ordinances banning solicitation. You may never put flyers inside private mailboxes, as this violates federal law.

Each community has a different set of regulation regarding soliciting or posting of flyers. Its best to check with your local gov't before doing this, otherwise it could be a nice fine.

You should check with your local police department to see if this would be in violation of any local or state ordinance. It also depends on what type of flyer you're talking about (e.g. are you selling a service? Espousing terrorist ideology?) There is no "one size fits all" answer.

If you can put them on cars, why not doors?

I haven't heard that it's illegal, but I'd check in your area before doing so.

No it is not illegal. As long as you are not going into a gated community or an area where is says that solicitating is forbidden or no trespassing.
