After you flush our toilet it runs sometimes and then you need to jiggle the handle.....I need to make a cutsie sign to remind my kids to do this.

I know that this needs to be fixed but I don't have any idea how to do it and no way to get parts for a few days (stuck in the middle of nowhere til my car gets fixed!) but until I CAN get it fixed I was just hoping for some ideas on how to avoid a million dollar h2o bill! Also...for the person that said I shouldn't have the kids handle anything because they will have to wash their hands after????? ummmmm they have to flush the toilet whether it is broken or not...I just want them to jiggle it right after they flush and right BEFORE they wash!

You don't have to buy a completely new toilet, but you do need to fix the problem inside the tank so that they don't have to jiggle the handle. The problem could be a number of things, so I don't know what to suggest. The problem that I've had is that the chain leading from the handle to the valve sometimes gets kinked. I replaced it with plastic cable ties, and I haven't had to jiggle since!
If you know anyone who is even slightly handy, they should be able to fix this for you cheaply ($1 - 25 in parts).
If you pay for your water, you will recover the money in no time. If you have a well, you can't afford to keep losing gallons of water every time someone forgets.

Just buy a new toilet. Older ones tend to be a bit unpredictable. You don't have to jiggle the handle on new ones.

It would be better to just fix the flush mechanism. Why make them handle something when they need to wash their hands next?

Maybe you should just fix the toilet. It probably needs a new chain or flush valve.

Use that silly Jello commercial that uses the word "jiggle" and "wiggle" over and over again. Kids pay attention to jingles, especially when they have visuals to connect with.
