My dad really wants to start his own business in gardening. He already has a little one, that he's had for many years, but he can take it so much further. It's just that he seems too concerned about what may happen if everything goes wrong. He has about 15 years of experience, and I know that he would be a total success. I feel like it's up to me to make his dream come true, and I hope that someday I can. Any ideas on how maybe I can help him get started? Thanks in advance!! :)

I've never started my own business but I have some resources that may assist you & your dad further.

The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore as well. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

Lawn Care/Gardening Specific:
* Start Your Own Lawn Care Business (Entrepreneur Magazine's Start Up) by Eileen Figure Sandlin
* Start & Run A Landscaping Business by Joel LaRusic
* How to Start a Home-Based Landscaping Business, 4th by Owen Dell
* Lawn Care & Gardening: A Down-To-Earth Guide to the Business by Mickey Willis

CA Specific:
* Small Business Start-up Kit for California by Peri Pakroo, Barbara Kate Repa
* How to Start a Business in California by Entrepreneur Press

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

First thing is to incorporate the business as it is going to be a personal service corporation as an LLC. Get the IRS tax ID number, Apply to state registration all this happens by phone and online. Make a website of what you want to do using simple tools like Namu6 and webhosting with yahoo. Promote the website by submitting it to search engines. Also get a business phone along with a yellow page listing. Buy Quickbooks to start your accounting system. Some reading required on how the accounts work.

Now the harder part get your shop and paperwork in order. Prepare all your tools and service vehicles. Get set for barrage of work you will get.

I was surprised that in four years I was doing business all over US, Australia and UK.
