Working in the private sector means just that. You are working for a private company or a corporation. Not the government. It generally pays more because in the private sector you are usually producing something or making a profit for the company you work for. Instead of bleeding the taxpayers dry with people that get paid for not doing much of anything.

It means you don't work in the public sector (like for the government). Since the private sector is market based, you can get paid anything you can justify your value as, and it can be different from one company to the next. Working for the government has much more stringent regulations on salary.

It means you don't work for the government. Because the government works for the people, private sector employees work for rich folk.

It means that they are paid by corporate or private money, and are not on the government payroll.
The best lawyers for instance, can earn millions representing large corporations.
Usually only average lawyers with idealistic dedication or political ambition work for the government, since the pay is "only" houndreds of thousands per year.
Even the president tool a pay cut becoming elected to office.
VP Cheney took a massive pay cut. He had to put all his loot in a blind trust. Although I certain he will somehow get by!
