Yes they are innocent. They only cry and make noises because that is how they communicate. And seeking attention is just for their security, in other words they like to know someone is around for them.

Even if they didn't cry, seek attention or make noise they are not completely innocent. I believe in the idea of original sin- we are all marked by the sinful actions of Adam and Eve in eating the forbidden fruit, and then being expelled from the Garden of Eden. This caused our fall into a sin-cursed world,of which we are all affected, even those who have just come into the world- babies. Even the really sweet ones with tufty hair and big eyes.

Under 2 years old, then the answer is "yes". That is the only way they can communicate. They can't talk and explain what they need (food, diaper change, etc.) & feel (tired, feelings hurt, love for you, etc.), so it comes out in the only things they are able to do; cry, make noise, and seek your attention.

We are onto the third theory of this since we started looking at childrens behaviour and development

Firstly we had a puritanical approach, all children were born sinners and we had to beate them and guide them into good people.

Then we had the romantics, children are empty vessels and innocent waiting to be filled with love and knowledge.

Now we have a mix, children are born with inherent charachteristics, these trigger behaviour and is in turn affected by experience.

Children only a few weekss old can cry to illicit a certain response but have not yet got a sense of self. This means that they do not see themselves a person, rather a continuation of the world around them.

90% of crying children can be soothed by simply picking them up and rocking them, regardless of whether they are hungry, dirty, thirsty or uncomfortable.

This leads us to think that children don't really do things to annoy us, but they can let us know when they are upset, but are easily pleased.

I think so, yes. They're crying, making noise and seeking attention because they need something from you and can't tell you any other way. I'm sure they're not doing it to be rude or evil. Babies can't reason...

of course they are innocent, crying is just a baby's way of communicating, you need to learn how to interpret the childs different types of cry. making noise again is just a learning curve, he/she will know that if they make a noise they will gain attention, once they learn to talk, beleive you will wish they would go back to the noise making cus at least that way they dont answer back.

in theory yes. especially a very young baby, i.e. before 6 months of age. usually at 6 months babies will start to "test" their parents to see if they are listening to them when they cry--but you can not discipline them for it, they are just learning about how communication works.
at the age of one though, children will cry for attention and know it. i wouldn't let them get their way for it, but offer a different solution.
by two, crying should only be for when they are hurt or upset, you want to try and build vocabulary then.
however, i believe all children are truly innocent until they can totally know right from wrong.

They are innocent. They don't know any better. All the noise making will still work the nerves, though!
