The currency in high school is popularity. So their priorities are to do the things necessary to maintain that popularity. As they move into the real world they find this means bumkiss. Now they realize that the things they forgone to prepare them for the real world to maintain their popularity was a bad choice. Some are able to turn it around and take those steps later. While others continue to maintain that image that made them popular hoping in some light it may give them great wealth and power. Rather, it keeps them subterrian and eating astronaut beverages.

The popular kids in high school are only popular in high school because school is not even close to the real world. It is a very small collection of kids from the same community and even neighborhoods. When these kids go out into the real world, they soon figure out they aren't hot shots after all. ISN'T LIFE GRAND?

Because they don't worry as much about the future, they won't worry about their grades in high school. Which in turn, means they won't get into a good college to earn a degree in order to be successfull later in life.

I, unfortunately, was one of the "nerdy" kids, who got relatively good grades (I maintained a B average), and couldn't afford to go to college. I couldn't get financial aid because my dad made to much money working. The sad thing is, they didn't look at the fact that my mother had tons of medical bills (she had ovarian cancer) and they still had 2 other kids to put through college.

Now that I'm an adult, making minimum wage, people are more than likely going to help me with financial aid (even though I'm a loser who still lives at home).

So, tang and basement dwelling it is.

Because high-school popularity really IS EVERYTHING...until you step out into the real world, struggling without your group of "friends".

I don't know. I've noticed a lot of the people who were popular in my class didn't go very far after we graduated and have wondered why.
