in order to actually learn something either you have to experience it or hear it from someone else. But naturally its better to learn it on our own. Why? because even though we can watch another person make a mistake and they learn from it, we can only observe what the reaction to the person is and what we would've done in that situation if ever confronted with it. But, we won't know exactly how to learn from others mistakes, if we have not encountered them ourselves.

actually both. are you going to go out and do something that just hurt your friend or family member. NO. you learn things everyday, every minute of the day. life is all about learning and living. mistakes are made but that is where we must learn from them. if we let God and his love for us walk thru life with us then that walk is a little easier. I'm not saying it will be perfect because all along the way there are lessons to learn and at times we have different teachers sent to us to show us the way.
we must all learn in our own way and try to improve our lives from the knowledge gained from those mistakes.
may God guide and protect you with his LOVE.
blessed be
Elizabeth

Learn things on your own! If you follow someone and only learn from their mistakes then you will never be ready for the real world, because it's not often you can learn from others mistakes!

I'd rather learn the hard lessons from others mistakes. Watching the incident with the Steelers QB almost kill himself by not wearing head protection while riding a motorcycle is a lesson I don't want to have to experience to understand. I don't want to learn what Jail is like form my mistakes either.
I want to learn about intimacy, love, affection, sorrow and grief etc. on my own terms.

I'd have to say that learning on your own is probably most effective.
Listening, watching, learning from others' mistakes is a great advantage, but most lessons must be experienced to actually be integrated into our actions.
For example; it doesn't matter how many times you tell a child the stove is hot, until they (we) personally touch it and experience the burn, the knowledge is easily forgotten.

The wise learn from the mistakes of others, while the foolish learn not even from their own.

Depends on the person and how analytical they are. Some people can keep dropping a weight on their foot and never learn anything and some can watch television and learn everything.
But as a father I feel it is better for my children to learn through experience than observation because experience hits home better whereas observation might not be applied as well.

personally, i think you have to make your own mistakes. yes you can learn things from other people but the most valuable lessons are learned from your own experiences and mistakes. Mistakes make you a stronger person.

Life is too short to learn so many things, and some mistakes can make it shorter, so i think learning from other's mistake is best. That is why we study history, sociology etc.

Everybody has their own learning styles and methods. I personally am the kind of girl who has to make my own decisions even if others have told me their experience. I need to follow my heart and do what I feel is right. If its not right - at least I know in my heart I did what I thought was best and didnt work. And form my own judgement and try to learn from it and make my own decision again.
