Well, they clean equally well. Honestly!
Powdered detergent is typically cheaper.
Liquid detergent is a good choice if you have hard water, because sometimes it can be hard for powdered detergent to dissolve all the way. Also, it's good to pre-treat stains.

I believe that liquid cleans your laundry better because it has the chance to dilute throughout the water of the wash-load, whereas the powder must dissolve before it can dilute, and I don't think it does so adequately, even if you put it into the water before adding the clothing.
Moreover, I think that liquid detergent is cleaner & easier to move, though it is heavier to transport. Cost per load is -- in my opinion -- probably about the same.

It costs less per load with liquid detergent. Plus, liquid detergent doesn't leave a paste on your clothes like powdered detergent can sometimes.

Powdered actually cleans a little better because of its abrasive qualities, but we prefer the convenience and dissolving power of liquids. Liquids are much easier to pour and measure with less splillage, but we've never really thought about the cost comparison.

The dumb answer: One's powdered and the other's liquid.
Smart answer: It's the strength of the detergent. I believe that liquid is stronger, but powdered is better for delicate pieces like a satin blouse, for an example.

I think that they are meant to work the same. Different washers work better with different types of detergents though. Liquid detergent is usually recommended for stacking washer/dryer combos. I like the liquid better as well, because it is almost guaranteed to disolve, and leaves less 'white' residue on clothing.

powder cheaper per load but messier. got to add the powder when the tub is filling up so it dissolves quicker and won't clot on your clothes. liquid far better in cleaing (in general) but more expensive. no residue leftover and much better overall job. no preference for either but my money is on liquid

From what I've seen, liquid detergent rinses out more easily.
