Inert means inactive. Gases in Column 8 or 18 on the periodic table do not react with anything. They are called the Noble gases. I guess the nobles didnt do any work either.

Steve S. is close. He missed Argon. And the inert gases are monatomic (not diatomic) molecules. Radon probably would form some compounds, but it is so radioactive that doing experiments with it is dangerous. Xenon forms a few stable compounds, krypton fluoride has been made, but none of the others show any reactivity at all.

Helium, Neon, Xenon, Krypton, and Radon are inert gases, meaning that they only exist as a diatomic gas, and no naturally occuring compounds include any of these elements. (Although researchers have made Xenon-hexafluoride among others, but not for a long time).

these gases are not active gases which are inert and does not react with environment
gases like oxygen act vigourously with the environment and degrade the environment

where as gas like He,Ne,Crypton ... does not react under normal conditions.

inert gases are in group 18 of the periodic table. it means they are unreactive. Their valence shell is full, meaning they have 8 electrons in their outermost shell making them extremely stable.

doesn't react. inert gas is N2 or Ar. good to run reactions with when O2/H20 screws them up.

it means that it won't react with anything in most situations. there are several of these gases, mostly noble gases, but there are compounds involving noble gases, which violate the octet rule.
