i loved dead man's chest but one question: they had a picture of the key that goes to davy jones's locker, will is a blacksmith........so why couldn't he just make a key?

I imagine that there was more to the key than just the shape. There is probably some magic about that specific key, considering that it unlocked a chest that contained a beating heart. A better question, I think, was why they needed a picture of the key in the first place. It seems that they could have guessed that Davy Jones would keep the key on him and it's not like there would have been lots of keys to choose from. Also, I hope we find out in the third movie what that place was where Jack got the picture of the key and why the picture of the key was there.
The writers put a lot of thought into the script of the first movie. I'm hoping they did the same with numbers two and three and that things that appear to be inconsistent will be resolved in number three.

None of the plot made sense, it could have been written by a 12 year old. Lord Becket just "happened" to show up on Will & Elizabeth's wedding day and wants the compass so he can get the key? At the EXACT same time Davy Jones comes to collect his debt from Jack, who now also needs to use the compass to get the key...riiiight...
The plot was corny and felt thrown together. Full of character descrepancies and way too many stupid coincidences. What a waste, part one was such a good movie. I hope Will goes insane and kills them all in part three so there aren't any more sequels. And I'm not even an Orlando Bloom fan...

I think he couldn't make the key, because wasn't he being arrested by the ... guy i cant remember who. If he went back the guy would have been expecting the compass from him. but i don't know,.

because they didn't think about it... he might not have been able to make an exact replica of it anyway. the picture might not have been the actual size of the key either.

where would he have gone to make a key? seriously....and there is only one key, a picture doesn't help, u'd have to have the exact key to may a replacut..doi!
