I am sending the check as a wedding gift. Are monetary gifts regarded as acceptable in the UK or are they negatively thought of.

Better to go to the Post Office and buy an International Money Order.

If you send a check, the recipient can get their bank to cash it but there will be extortionate charges.

Monetary gifts are acceptable in the UK.

A better alternative would be to find out whether the person in the UK has an online wedding list (usually hosted by a departmental store). The benefits of this are:

1. You'll definetely be buying something they want.
2. You won't end up buying something which someone else has already purchased.
3. You can use your credit card.
4. Special arrangements would already have been made to get the goods to the recipient.

There isn't anything wrong about monetary gifts, especially in this case, as anything else probably wouldn't survive the journey unscathed.

As for the original question. It will be fine, just that it might take a bit longer to clear and the bank will probably use their exchange rate which might include interest.

Re the cheque (British English spelling), check with your bank, they will be able to arrange a specially designed cheque which will be able to be cashed in the United Kingdom.
Monetary gifts are perfectly acceptable in the U.K. (and I would imagine in most other parts of the world!)

I would always send a traceable form of currency(Travelers check or money order). If you must send a check, I would go to your local bank and see if they have the Euro in stock. I work for a bank and we have it at the main lobby of our Branch for purchase. In my opinion it is safer sending that then it is a personal check with all your personal information on it.

But in answer to your original question Yes you can, I would just not recommend it.
