Make a simple quilt. Just cut a bunch of fabric into squares and sew them together. When it is the size you want, get some quilt batting and a large piece of fabric. Make a sandwich of all of these and sew them together. You can get some binding to make a border. Instead of trying to do fancy quilting on this just take yarn and tie knots at each intersection of the squares. It can be something that you will be proud of and isn't a fad that will go away in a couple of years.
Have fun!

I would say the quilt. I took a class on quilting as an elective two years ago in school. It was so much cooler than I though it would be. I got to pick the colors I liked and it turned out really cool.
Price is a factor for this too. You need a fabric scissors or a blade and a cutting mat. Also, everything needs to be measured very precisely. However, if it is something you want to put a lot of time and effort into, then it would be a good idea. You also need to purchase fabrics and batting.
I would suggest you purchase like a beginners guide to quilting or something along the lines of that. It will guide you through the process step by step. If it is something that you end up really enjoying you could make it into a hobby, and if you don't like it, then you know not to do it again.

Hmm. I seem to be the tie-breaker at the moment. Scrapbook...don't just fill it with pictures. Write about what you were doing at the time the picture was taken, how you feel about the people in the picture with you, and make funny captions to go under them. Include rewards, certificates, or perhaps a poem you like or have written. Be creative, and have fun with it. Quilting is much better when shared.

Gosh, so many good answers! Personally, I would do the quilt. Quilts can be as simple or as elaborate as you want to make them. I have a friend that makes quilts from old jeans--she just cuts squares and sews them together, adds backing and batting, and tied knots . Here are some links to get you started. http://www.straw.com/quilting/articles/bluejeans.html

I am a knitter and fill many hours that way--plus, I have great gifts! Many craft stores offer classes, and many things cam be learned on the internet. Cross stitch is a very cheap hobby, and counted cross stitch can be used to personalize items. Whatever you decide to do, make it FUN. A hobby isn't a hobby if you have to force yourself to do it.

Well I'd say doing the scrapbook (since you said you don't know how to make a quilt). Personally, I would rather make a scrapbook also..

I would say the quilt-you could go to a craft store and buy a book on "how to" or go to a class which might be kind of fun.

Maybe consider something else. You could knit a blanket and have the same thing as a quilt, but it would be easier to learn and alot cheaper to make.

Go for the quilt! You should be able to find a pattern that you can do easily as a first-timer. Maybe make a quilt-square pillow first...
