Because American (I'm guessing that you are talking about the U.S.) culture, fables and traditions (and even architecture) are largely based on their ties to Anglo and European history; far more so than to any other region of the world.

Greek advances from the past are thought of more highly and some are still used today. Many African advances, save for the Egyptians, are ignored and/or unknown.
This includes the gods. And, the Greek gods were adopted (and in most cases transformed) by the Romans and Vikings, thus aiding their popularity.

I agree that the Greek gods are just more widely known. Alot of the pagans I know honour a few of the African goddesses and if you count Egypt as being African, well then, there are many hundreds that work with those deities.

Cuz I think we are taught a lot more about the greek Gods and their history than we are African Gods and Africa. I don't even know of any African Gods and I took a mythology class in college...

accepted how? they are still thought of as myth, not fact. they are taught because the majority of the world's culture started at the fertile cresent. Greek gods are remade into a number of other religions, notably the Romans. African gods.......... well, there's a larger number, not as well known, mores specific to the natives.

Aren't ancient African Gods just ancestor spirits? Or the spirits of animals?
If so, then the West usually likes to hear about traditional monotheistic deities like Thor and Odin, Zeus and Hades, or God and His helper monkey.

It just depends who you are. In the South, Santeria, Voudoun, Voodoo, Hoodoo...correspond with African Deities. Although I do not practice that path, I am fond of Yemaya, who is Lady of the Flowing Waters, One of the Orishas.

Are you sure you don't mean better known? Greek culture has been publicized a lot more and a lot longer than African cultures.
