I have worked my butt off for Wal-Mart and have had an almost perfect attendance record for that place for over 3 years. I've applied for dozens of jobs and been rejected every time. I and every single one of my co-workers I work with overnight hate that store and only work there for the mere fact that we are trying to find better work. The place has no soul and no opportunities whatsoever. It hires some of the most incompetent and unreliable people possible. What should I do to escape Wal-Mart? Looking for sound advice. Thanks!

The best advice I can give you is to get an education. Even if all you can do is take one class at a time, do it. With the low income that Wal-mart pays, you should be able to qualify for a lot of financial aid from any college you would apply to. Look into it, and good luck.

I'm a high school career counselor in San Diego and here's what I advise ...
Well obviously it's time to move on. Make a list of occupations you've considered over the past 3 years and write them down on paper. This is called "brainstorming". Add to that list any occupations you've ever considered regardless if you're qualified right now.
And after working 3 years for Wal-Mart you've acquired customer service skills, you're hard working and very reliable.
take the list of occupations and do a keyword search at monster.com for each occupation and type in the city (where you want to work)
This will be the most time consuming part of your new job search process. Although you may narrow your search to those occupations you prefer and file the rest for now.
You keyword search will hopefully produce a list of positions availble for that occupation in the city you requested. Now review each positions and save the ones you want to take closer look at.
I recommend you keep your choices to 6 or 7 ... the reason is you don't want too much information.
In summary, your "brainstorm" list will be narrowed to a one page list of occupations then narrowed to a list of 6 or 7.
Keep in mind some occupations may require more education then you currently have ... especially those that require a certification.
Anyway I hopes this info was helpful.

I sympathize with your predicament. I don't have much advice, only an observation. You yourself said that Wal-Mart hires some incompetent and unreliable people, maybe when employers see that you work at Wal-Mart it is a mark against you.
Maybe you've already tried, but search out companies with more ethical practices. Is there a Whole Foods in your area? I've heard CosCo are OK employers.
Good Luck!

My friends who used to work at Wal-Mart said the same thing. Get out of that place as soon as you can! Got to Target, I heard it's better there. Keep applying for jobs. It is always difficult to find new job. Sometimes it takes up to 3 months to switch jobs. Don't worry about it, you'll find a new job eventually. I hope this helps.

Learn a trade and get a job in construction. Guys and ladies in our area - painters, hangers, and others in the construction industry are making up to $30 per hour non-union. Maybe you ought to move to where there are more job opportunities.
Yes, Wal-Mart is a lousy place to work, but I sure find what I want when I shop there.

surely, if low end workers all started making a lot extra, the cost of things and facilities may skyrocket. it is talked about as inflation. So if minimum salary is $16 an hr operating example, then a $a million hamburger at McDonalds may now cost $2 or $2.50. so that you'll be able to also make $16 an hour, yet when it buys a similar, then all that is is a diverse variety to stay a similar way.

Quit and get a different job. Nobody is forcing you to work there.
