Originally for people who came from nigeria. then people shortened the term to that N word. The people of color didn't like that it sounded bad when used in slang terms, hence African American was then adopted. You just can't make all the people happy at the same time can you.

Word is racially offensive if used in the United States. If you remove the second letter "g" however, "Niger" is a country in Africa.
