I am 28 weeks pregnant with my first baby, and my doctor's office has asked me to come in for a Rhogam shot. I am a blood type A+ and my husband is a B+. I thought only people who were a negative blood type needed this shot?

You shouldn't need to get rhogam...its only for negative blood type, because neg's dont' have the positive anitbodies. I had to have a few shots. Besidesyou are supposed to have the first one at 16-18 weeks. They must have made a mistake. You already have the positive antibodies because you are A+.

Interesting, usually they give Rhogam if the mother had a miscarriage or lost a baby in the past and the mother is negative. I really would question why they are recommending you get a Rhogam shot because give both you and your husband blood types it doesn't make sense.

The Rhogam shot has to do with your Rh-factor being negative. I had to have this shot also, because I am Rh Negative. My daughter was given a shot at birth because she also is Rh-negative. Read below to understand why.

If Rh-positive blood is transfused into an Rh-negative person, the latter will gradually develop antibodies called anti-Rh agglutinins, that attach to the Rh-positive red blood cells, causing them to agglutinate. Destruction of the cells (hemolysis) eventually results. If the Rh-negative recipient is given additional transfusions of Rh-positive blood, the concentration of anti-Rh agglutinins may become high enough to cause a serious or fatal reaction. The same type of immune reaction occurs in the blood of an Rh-negative mother who is carrying an Rh-positive fetus. (The probability of this situation occurring is high if the father is Rh positive.) Some of the infant's blood may enter the maternal circulation, causing the formation of agglutinins against the fetal red blood cells. The first baby is usually not harmed. But, if the mother's agglutinins pass into the circulation of subsequent fetuses, they may destroy the fetal red blood cells, causing the severe hemolytic disease of newborns known as erythroblastosis fetalis.

As far as I know that shot is only for negative blood types. In most cases the Dr's don't even know the fathers blood type. Maybe the Dr. got the wrong blood type for you or maybe you thought you were A+ when really you are A-.

Before you get any Shots, be sure your Doctor absolutely explains why you need it...AND ask many questions until you are satisfied with his answer. Be totally prepared. ALSO...VERY IMPORTANT!!! Demand mercury free Rhogam Shots, do not settle for anything less. If your Doctor tells you there is absolutely no scientific data to back up the autism/mercury connection, ask him WHY there are new fish consumption guide lines for pregnant women. PLEASE, for the future sake of you unborn Child.

To the best of my knowledge only an RH neg factor blood type needsthe Rhogam injection.
Please check with your physician again to find out why he/she is requesting this type of injection for you. It is not common that a positive blood type should need this. Especially since both parents are positive.

You're right. If you have a positive blood type you don't need the shot. I wonder if your doc is trying to scam your insurance co.

Edited to add: Sassy, she's not Rh-, she's Rh+
