Lightning is an electrical discharge between the clouds and the earth (or something near earth). It is cause by static electricity due to dust particles in the clouds being an insulator and pulling free electrons to form a huge electrical charge.

Walking across carpet with rubber shoes and having a small spark jump from your hand to a door-knob is the same thing, just on a much smaller scale.

Typical lightning bolts are hundreds-of-millions of volts and tens-of-thousands of amps in power. Thunder is the audible byproduct of air molecules being superheated and violently expanding.

when clouds float in skydue to air flow.they rub eachother & exchange charges on it's surface. whenever these charges come in contact or nearby some objects with metal in it.by induction the object get oppositely charged & chances of lightening are there.thus lightening is transference of static charge of cloud down to the earth.hope u understand.

Basically, static electricity that builds up in clouds gets great enough to "spark" to the ground or other grounded objects.

Wikipedia has a lot more on this...

It's when cold and hot come together and make a surge of electricity. It starts from the ground but it goes so fast that it looks like it comes from the sky.

its the electric discharge ,when the positive and negative ions in the clouds colide and the moisture in the atmosphere which helps it travel towards the ground [ not all the lightining reach the ground ]
