because when you are going home you know exactly where you are going and how to get there.
when going to someplace you are looking at signs and reading addresses. it is much more tiring. you also do not know how long it will take to get there.
on the way home you can say 10 minutes to go and countdown

Chances are you were awake the whole time you were getting to a new place (anxiety at work). On your way home, you were probably napping from time to time so it seemed shorter since the time you were conscious was shorter.

good question. i have often wondered the same thing. the only explanation i can come up with is that on the way there you are anxious to get there, so it seems like it takes forever to get there. you usually aren't in as big a hurry to get back home.
dunno, really, that is just my opinion

You see familiar sights on the way home which is somewhat entertaining but also lets you know of progress in a direct, perceptual sense.
