Peope think this because how we present ourselves to the world is generally how people judge us. Most people are completely ignorant about the subtleties of what it means to be a "Goth," except for dress. Also, most people are lazy and it's much easier to make a snap judgement about somebody based on appearances than to actually get to know someone.
Don't be too quick to get upset at someone who makes a snap decision based on dress. We do it all the time. If someone wears penny loafers, keeps their hair neat and clean and is named Jody, we automatically think they are preppy. They may be a serial killer for all we know. Interestingly enough, you're probably more likely to be killed by a 25 year old white guy wearing jeans than you would ever be by a Goth, stereotypes nothwithstanding.

Well it is uneducated for people to assume that but people assume things like that because it's the easiest thing they can relate it too.
The Gothic style can relate to a heavy, dark type of style wether it's the style of furniture, buildings, etc.
So the word Gothic makes people think of dark, industrial, etc.
Also in some alternative scenes a style has been picked up and it's called gothic. The people in this scene wear dark clothes, dark makeup, listen to dark music, and are fascinated with vampires, etc.

Some people catagorize people as "goths" because they just simply want to. They feel the need to group people by the way they dress or act. They're full of assumptions and quick judgments. Same thing goes for "Prep" or any label.
Gothic refers to many things. Gothic music, Gothic art, Gothic architecture...just to name a couple. People who are referred to as "Goths" or "Gothic" are probably just interested in any of those three areas I named. Therefore, they influence their sense of fashion by the music or art.
