You keep the phone but you are not under the contract any more. You can renew the contract and sometimes you can trade in your phone towards another one. Your choice.

You bought it. Is yours to keep, you can renew the contract and get another one or they can send you a pay as you go Sim

At the end of a contract the phone USUALLY becomes yours.
As a little glimmer of hope, even if it IS locked to a network they are legally obligated to unlock it for you - but the ARE allowed to charge you an 'administration fee'. '3' for example charge £15 to unlock ex-contract phones.
I recently had two 6630's unlocked, worked am ALL networks except '3' - sold two days later on ebay......

no, the phone is your to keep. usually, when making payments on the bill you are paying for the phone. when the contract is up, depending on the company you maybe offered a new phone or you are able to upgrade to a newer phone.

No. The network provider has already made money from the contract to subside the phone set.

No once the contract is cancelled the phone becomes yours although chances are that the handset is locked to one particular network.
you can use it as you wish to recycle, to send to charity or to put on a pay as you go contract.
