Provera will not make you ovulate--the other poster is wrong, she is talking about Depo provera not just provera. Provera is a progesterone and while taking it the progesterone builds up in your system and when you stop taking the level of prog. drops and it causes a withdrwal bleed. This is not a real period, just an induced bleed. It will not cause ovulation. You need to take another med for that such as clomid.

jilldaniel_wv is correct. provera (without the Depo) will induce a withdrawl bleed. My doc said it is used to try to start fresh and hopefully "reset" your future periods. (Kind-of tricking your body into thinking it's regular so that it continues that pattern)

Additionally, it can be quite effective when used in combination with other drugs. Such as the Clomid, Provera and Metformin combination.

Good Luck!

My specialist put me on provera to start a period once. Provera won't help you ovulate but it will get your cycle going again. If you ovulate on your own, there's no need for other meds. If you don't ovulate regularlly he/she may prescribe clomid. You can potentially get pregnant on the cycle after provera. (I think some people who answered your question are confusing provera with depo provera!)

depo provera is the birth control shot which keeps you from getting pregnant, as well as several other side effects i have been on it and also heard stories from many women on it. You need to get off of it ASAP. It messes you up. Also it can make it extra hard to have a child once you do get off of it. I suggest switching to birth control pills until your ready to have the baby..Side effects of provera are weight gain, depression, prolong infertility (after getting off) bone mass loss.. many many others.. its just overall terrible for you. And no it wont help, infact it will prevent pregnancy

Lol, your doc should be slapped and whipped. Also, why the heck are you so impatient to get pregnant? Just wait for the period, geez. Trust me, you're gonna wish you had waited longer bc being pregnant blows and having kids makes life unbearable for most of the time. Skip the pregnancy thing and adopt..do something good for society instead of pumping out more mouths to feed. Don't be a selfish little ninny.
