Question is a little confusing but I'll take a stab at this and maybe help you.

I worked at a car wash while in High school. We were all hourly and when it got slow the owner would make us clock out but we still had to stay there. When cars would come in we could clock in again. Someine went to a lawyer and he could not do this.

He ended up having to pay everyone back time because of this.

If you are on the clock you get paid from the time you clock in until you clock out.

I also worked for a John Deere dealership where the employees were considered "farm workers" and the owner did not pay overtine. We often worked 80 hours per week at peak times and we did not get time and a half pay.

This is legal practice. You either work the hours or look elsewhere.

I don't suppose either example falls under what you are asking is it?

You might want to explain yourself a little better. An employer HAS to pay you for time worked. Meaning the time you punch in to the time you punch out. If you work more than 8 hours, they can dock you for a 1/2 hour lunch whether or not you punch out.

You are only paid for the hours shown on your card. If you worked longer and forgot to punch out, they will adjust it. If you forget to punch in...work...and then remember...your supervisor must approve the time you worked. If you notice...if they owe you time, it is much more difficult...but when you owe them time, they are very quick.

If you are paid hourly, you will only be paid for the hours you are "on the clock" . If you have to clock in and out for lunch, you are not being paid for your lunch break. So dont get excited if you get an hour for lunch. Your not being paid for it.
