For that matter how about a G4 powerPC?

Is it a BIOS support issue?

Not possible.

Yes, it would be a BIOS issue. I have never seen a BIOS with that option. (yes, boot from network, but NOT from USB)

I don't know about the G4 powerPC, but I seriously doubt it.

You can only do it if the BIOS of the computer allows it. Can not speak for the MAC, but with a PC, go into the BIOS settings and check the boot order. If it can boot from a USB device, that will be one of the choices. If not, you can not do it. (As old as a PIII is, I would say you probably can not. But does not hurt to look).

WTF? Of course you can boot from a USB drive. I do it frequently. But your BIOS MUST support this fucntion.

Most (if not all) P4 ASUS motherboards have this capability. Most store bought systems (like dell, HP, compaq etc) do not seem to have this capability as often. Mostly not at all.

Dunno about Macs though.
