do it now. your kids are going to get more active and need you around more as they get older so time will be more limited once they get involved in school and activities. Besides - you will make excuses and may never get around to it and then be resentful. Suck it up and do it now!!! Besides the extra income from advancement will help all of you in the future.

A Master's is an impressive achievement all by itself. Most people get doctorates to do research and teach at a university -- you don't need a doctorate unless your need the bump in pay from the state. Work out the economics of it. A doctorate can take several years to complete. How long would it take to make that up with the bump in pay for the PhD level from the tuition?

For myself, I'd wait for your children to grow a bit before starting a doctorate. They're only young once, and you will need help at home from older children who are responsible enough to help if you're working and going to school. But keep in contact with your professors so that they know to give you letters of recommendation when you decide to dive back into school.

Don't stop. The time will never get better. After you have 3 kids under 5, you'll have 3 kids under 10, followed by 3 kids getting ready for college. Your kids will need you more once they're in school than they do now. For now they can curl up with you and happily listen to you read to them from your text books (my son learned all about Macroeconomics when I was in grad school and could explain the inelasticity theory better than most college students by the time he was 5).

If you can finish your education in the next 3 years, you'll have all that wonderful time left to set a great example for your kids and be there for their little league games, soccer matches and spelling bees.

In the long run, getting your Ph.D. doesn't take that much longer, and I will help you in the future (you automatically get paid more). Don't let any one part of your life rule it, make time for your kids and give your job all it requires. It is better to do it now then to wait, because then you will experience the "why go back" feeling. If you are frustrated with school and happy with where your masters will take you, then just stay where you are at, but if your goal is your Ph.D., then work for it, don't hold back and don't stop until you achieve it. If you need to, take more time with your classes or only go every other semister.

Good luck

It depends. Truly evaluate the benefits or disadvantages.
I would usually say definately go ahead and finish.
But at the same time if you are truly feeling convicted that you are not spending enough time with your kids right now and that you should be then you HAVE to follow your convictions!!!
You have to stay true to yourself, your heart, your beliefs, your children because that creates generations of quality time and love that a phd can never replace.

If you can handle it, I'd say go for it. How is going for your phd different than a full-time job? I know a woman who just finished her phd and has two young children. Granted, she had a lot of support from her husband, and set up boundaries so family life would not impinge on her work life and vice versa.

If you're up to the task you should definitely try to do it now. Your kids are still young and the important memories are yet to come. Taking time off is never a good idea because it is so hard for us to get back into the swing of things later. I did my undergrad then took off about eight years before going back to grad school and it was hard to pick back up. As long as you're able, keep going.

You need to finish because when they get older you wont have the time to think straight. I know because I have three kids and my wife and I are constantly going in one direction or another

First, examine why you think you need your doctorate. Second, think about your kids and how they need you. I would give it a rest until the children were in school.
