For the last week my eyes have been red and irritated, i went and a saw an opthmalogist, which said there is nothing wrong with my eyes, but I know that they don't feel normal to me, their is this stinging and burning sensation, eye drops are doing nothing for me, could this be dry eyes and if so how long does is usually last? Also would the opthamalogist tell me if it was dry eyes?

The ophthalmologist should have done a test to check your tear break-up time which shows how long the tears are staying on your eye (usually greater than 10sec) before they start to break up. There are also a few other tests out there to determine if you have dry eye but not all doctors have them.
Allergies are almost always associated with itching which you did not mention so I assume you do not suffer from. Taking antihistamines for allergies will actually make your eyes dry, exasperating the problem if you do have dry eyes.
Visine drops contain preservatives which can irritate your eyes when used for an extended period of time so they are best to stay away from. Try OTC drops such as systane or refresh tears. These are excellent drops that are normally recommended for dry eye patients. Taking omega-3 fatty acids can also help with dry eye if the problem comes from a deficiency in your lipid layer in the tear film (causing the tears to evaporate faster).
As with anything - if you're not happy with your doctors answer - go get a second opinion. An optometrist is trained in detecting and diagnosing dry eye so don't shy away from them, they probably deal with it more than most ophthalmolgists (who tend to deal with more complicated issues).
good luck!

make sure your using the right eye drops and yes the optomoligist would tell you if you were having a problem. Call your optomoligist and see if he could prescribe you some natural tears its more gentle then the over the counter eye drops that can irritate your eyes or maybe check with your local pharmacist they can help also they may have something a little better for you.

It might just be the weather. I have the same problem when weather conditions change drastically. Just wait a few days and see if your problem gets better... if not, go back to doctor. Eye drops sometimes make this problem worse - so try to stay away from those. You might want to get some drops that specialize in bringing moisture to your eyes - this is what helps me.

I used to never have trouble will dry eyes until I had Lasik surgery and then I had horrible dry eyes. The best eye drops are called Soothe and if that doesn't help ask your eye doc about tear duct plugs. I have them in both upper and lower ducts of my right eye and it has done wonders.

If you had an eye condition, your ophthalmologist would have told you. It is likely allergies, and I would suggest getting Visine for allergy-affected eyes, and also get an antihistamine, which will help with the symptoms.
