No, they are not similar, but they are inter-related. The one thing both have in common is they both must be licensed to issue drawings for construction/installation. If the architectural firm is a larger one then they typically have an in-house interior design group who handles the interior portion of the project, unless the client elects to hire a different company to handle the interior design.
The architect is responsible for the construction of the building. The interior designer designs every part of the layout/design of an interiors space, this also includes any non-load bearing walls. As an interior designer you are responsible for floor layouts (includes furniture, plants, aquariums, lighting, electrical, wall and floor covering designations), elevations of cabinetry, selection of wall and floor coverings, furniture, lighting fixtures, plumbing fixtures, etc.

It all depends. The Architect will design the building "base building" the interior design "fit-up" is normally designed by an interior designer. On small jobs the architect may design both, on larger jobs the architect or client may hire an interior design firm to design and fit out the interior. The architect may also have an Interior design department that can also complete the task on large projects.
The Retail is slightly different. The onwer of a mall will hire the architect to build the building. The interior of the mall may be designed by the same architect or an interior designer. The retail space is then leased out to business who would then use their own interior designers to fit out the space

usually its the merchandiser who plans the layout of the store. setting up the planograms, display units, floor layouts and blueprints of the floor itself. depending on what store it is, usually there are set guidelines on how they are decorated or dressed up. architects are mainly for buildings themselves, not so much the insides of it.architect designs the actual building and its layout but is not necessarily concerned with how the inside are fashioned. that can be more for interior design and merchandisers if you're talking about retail store. interior design is mainly predicated with homes and offices and such, not so much on retail or architectural concerns. put it this way, the architect builds the house, foundation and all and it's the interior designer who prettys up the inside.

my boss usually designs. he hires construction workers to put in permanent features such as indoor waterfalls, stone sculptures, etc. i think interior designers usually just does the decorating with the structure they already have inside. architects have more to do with construction and building, but interior designers just decorate.
