Area 51 is a testing ground in Nevada, about an hour from Las Vegas.
The primary thing done there is test new aircraft. The Blackbird and the Stealth bomber, for example, were "air-tested" at Area 51.
Consequently, they take security very seriously. Since this is the testing ground for next-gen weapons, they don't want potential enemies to know what'll hit them.

Area 51 has gotten soooooo much publicity, not only from curious on-lookers who manage to somehow obtain pics and maps of Area 51 and even people who claimed to have worked inside the facility and seen strange things,,, look... whatever Area 51 has or HAD in it, they're not dumb, they know the general public is on to them. Throw in the fact that our government always lies about the very exsistence of Area 51 when everybody has pics and things just get worse. If something outta this world was there chances are it was moved somewhere else in secret...(see Camp Hero, Dulce, New Mexico, Rainbow City, Antartica, etc.) Without a doubt, theres something or WAS something there.
Heck...its the only base in which people can't come within a certain distance without encountering armed personell (Wackenhut private security). I heard not even regular army personell are allowed anywhere near the base.. very strange indeed.

Actually, now that they let the Russians take satellite photos of the place, I think it's more of a diversion from a new, secret base in Utah or Nevada.

It's just where they test new planes now. It has drawn too much attention for anything else.
