Absolutely not. Historically the US has supported Taiwan in order to maintain their democratic form of government in a region where most governments are either communist, military controlled or dictatorships. By preserving a democracy in the region the US may have been hoping to influence the citizens of the mainland to seek the the same freedoms as those found in Taiwan.
We have sold Taiwan military hardware-fighters, missles and so on. In the early years that and the risk of our military involvement or economic reprisal was enough to keep mainland China's actions to rhetoric and military "exercises" near the Straits of Taiwan. Today it is a different story China posseses more then enough guided missles to wipe out all of Taiwan's military installations. China's Navy has developed very quietly into a formidable armada including several new diesel submarines.

If China attacks Taiwan we must stay out it. We risk our significant damage to our Naval assests in the area, we risk adverse economic actions. The US imports a lot of goods from China, we risk China seizing American firms, slapping tariffs on US exports to China and nationalizing Chines based American firms. Also there is the risk of missle "overshoot" as far as Japan and the West Coast region the the US. It is an "internal" problem now, it really always has been. It is simply not worth the damage it would to our military and to our economy. A unified China might even be better for the world both militarily and econmically. As the cultures mix democratic philosopy and capitalism may accelerate China's growing movement towards capitalism, which would be a good thing. Singapore is an example in which China took control of a country (from England) with no substantial ill effects.

I doubt that hey would attack anyway, there are some Taiwanese who want unification. Additionally China does not really wish to destroy a valuable infrastructure in Taiwan that hey could exploit to their benefit

no I don't care about taiwan. let those chinks take it. I don't want the US to pay a huge price for such an insignificant piece of ****. The United States needs to stop borrowing from China now!!!!!!! We need to educate are children now so that the next generation can maintain America's glory in the future (I'm talking 10 hour school days with specific times for athletics i.e.-no more than 2 hours of practice for any one sport) Also we should have school on Saturdays....trust me if we did that we'd catch up to the rest of the world in terms of education very quickly (we already win in virtually every other important category).

No! The U.S. and China made an agreement to turn over Taiwan and it should adhere to that agreement. When the pact was signed Taiwan was nothing more than a poor country. It's economy has since ballooned thanks to the U.S. but if we resist China it will show the world that our word and our agreements are worthless. China will not force the Taiwanese to go back to grass huts. It will embrace the economic success and use it to expand its own mainland

i think we should let the entire world blow up eachother, then go and take out the remaining country.

of course, i'm also a fan of the "escape from l.a." idea........

another thought - does it really make a difference? i mean, "made in china", "made in taiwan", whatever. still means it's junk, right?

I think USA should take a break from playing the role of "Cop of the World" cause one day USA may burn its finger in the game...

I don't know if USA should or not, but it would, I am sure.

USA should go about minding its own business.
It shouldn't interfere with the UN too, which might try to resolve the conflict.
