The news reported that the Israeli Army has made statements that they really don't expect it to last more than another week before the international community steps in to stop it, and they have shown signs of being willing to negotiate. So I think it will get a bit worse, but will end before the Summer is out.

Events in the Middle East are driven not only by the very simple, obvious aspects of the conflict but also by the agendas of other nations. Although one serious mis-step might indeed lead to a regional or general war, most countries do not want to see this conflict expland.
Syria and Iran would like nothing better than for the US to make a major mistake of more direct inolvement. The US does NOT want Israel to expand this war by attacks on either of those two nations, however. That concern is likely to affect Israeli actions.
It is probable that several European states will eventually take the lead in bringing this fighting to a close. France and Great Britain in particular have both interest and influence in the Levant.
Ultimately, Israel will clear some kind of "buffer zone" in southern Lebanon, and attempt before the fighting is finished to as seriously cripple Hezbollah and others in Lebanon as possible. Some sort of international pressure will force the conflict to a halt, and an international military force installed between the unoccupied sections of southern Lebanon and the Israelis.
In the meantime, unless Israel acknowledges that it must find a way to reach an accord with the Palestinians in Gaza - and that Hamas must recognize its reponsibilities as part of a government - there will continue dangerous trouble with the Palestinians.

I think Hezbollah will get its butt kicked, but will not admit it. I think Hamas will get its butt kicked too. But even with the butt kicking, nothing will change. In a few years it'll happen again.
