My 12yr old daughter lives with her father in NY. She is here with me visiting for the summer. She has asked me to set her up with an email account so that we can more easily keep in touch. We were using her step-mothers address, but privacy is limited at best. While there's nothing that I wouldn't say in front of her father or stepmother, however the same doesn't hold true in her case. Besides not being my computer, I'm afraid of "overstepping" my boundaries with her father. There's several ways of handling this, including coming right out and "asking" her father. What do you all think? Also, is she old enough for an email account? Is it safe?

You are still her mother! You still have a say in some of her growing up years! It is safe for a 12 year old to have her own e mail account. When u set up the account it will ask if this is an account for someone under age 18 and u say YES and give her age. The computer will not let in any porn or anyone over 18 e mail her! Except approved e mails like your own!!! Its wonderful- it keeps them safe and keeps u from worrying too! I would set it up for her! I think even your hubby will feel safe knowing u put an age block on it! Good luck

Don't know where you are located, but of course it is important for you and your daughter to communicate with each other with some degree of privacy. Her father and stepmother should understand and support that. It's that or lots of long distance calling! Talk with the father to tell him your and your daughter's wishes. Be sure you all have a conversation with your daughter about safely using email and online communication.

I just set up my 8 yr old daughter with her own email address. I believe asking her father is a smart thing to do.

set her up with a free email account. she will be fine. Make sure you have the password also so you can monitor it. Instant messenger is also a plus.

And if your really worried,
NY has Cricket cell phones. The service is dirt cheap, she can talk all she wants, along with text message, 500 minutes of long distance a month.

i would talk to the father, you can probably set up an account that has restrictions on who she can email, blocking all but certain addresses. but i think it would be ok for her to have one. let him have access to the account, but be fair in letting her have her privacy. she needs to learn how to be responsible, and its a good way to start.

My advise is that depending if "you" think that she is old enough. If you do then just go ahead and do so, life is short so let your daughter enjoy it by letting here do what she wants, you don't even know when you will die anyway
