We (US) are not a democracy, we are a republic. BIG difference here...a republic elects representatives to make decision for them, where a democracy means that all people have a say in any decisions. Most scholars agree that democracy = ''the mob rules''. witness the frontier justice of the old west, where a prisoner was taken from the jail and lynched. Our founding fathers placed a safeguard to prevent this; The checks and balances system of government.
The trouble in the mid east today has its origins in the distant past, and no one yet has come up with a satisfying answer to stop the conflict. Until this happens (and it may not) These people will continue to make war on each other, and unfortunately also suffer the consequences. Systems of government really have nothing to do with it; If you would like to point a finger, organized religion of ANY faith is the true culprit.

I think the word and the meaning are ok. Maybe we should change the way we understand Democracy. Democracy is the less harmfull political system, not the best. Some years ago, philosphers used the term radical democracy (as the greeks understood it). It would be interesting to try a real democracy where all people would be citizens with rights to lead people; I don't think that they would do worse than Tony Blair or Bush are doing.

Been watch Al Jazeera again? Israel is NOT targeting civilians, in fact last I heard about 30 or 40 had been killed, if they were targeting them, don't you think that number would be a lot higher? Israel is going after Hezbollah, not the Lebanese people, government, or even military.

Democracy is working just fine. The duly elected leaders in Lebanon decided to let Hezbolah shoot rockets and send suicidal bombers into Israel. The democratically elected Israelis are defending themselves. Is it OK for Hezbolah to kill civilians with their rockets?
