From what I have heard, the optical fibers on the market right now do not transmit enough light to be effective. But there are some companies (such as http://www.timbercon.com/Fiber-Optic-Home-Lights/index.html ) that do offer it currently, though I would expect to see big improvements to the technology if you wanted to wait a few years.

btw, the link says fiber optics do not emit heat.

I don't see why you couldn't yield heat from the light from optical fibre...it'd take a lot of fibre, but that light could get absorbed and reemitted in the infrared as heat, so yeah.
