I can't speak to the Austrailian options, but there are certainly employment opportunities for anyone with an A&P in Alaska. Many charter companies have (or want) their own mechanic on staff because they're flying 2 to 5 planes and they keep needing 50-hour maintenance, minor repairs, more major overhauls (usually engine R&R for off-site overhaul). Of course major and cargo airlines have maintenance facilities in Anchorage.
The North Slope or oil platform jobs are cool if you don't have a family. Well paid and often scheduled as 2 weeks of 12-hour days followed by 2 weeks off. 2 weeks of vacation 13 times a year! You work hard when you're there, but what else is there to do in a remote oilfield anyway? And they house and feed you. It isn't just BP Arco, etc. But also Halliburton, Veco, etc - all the oil field services, welding, and support contractors.
