You should always major in something that is related to it. I am going to med school in a couple years and I am majoring in Biology and Business.

For you I would study anything you could find related to animals. It would help you out if you knew about them.

Zoology would probably be your best bet.

Some popular majors for law school are public justice and philosophy. Since you want to be an animal welfare lawyer, look into taking a philosophy major with a zoology or biology minor. This will give you an excellent background as these two fields can interweave easily.

I took majored under a pre-law program and political science... but you might have better chances if you major in something that makes you a well rounded applicant like business, history or biology.

Take a class in each of Ethics, Logic, and Reasoning. You can major in Business Law, or anything else that you fancy. Communication is good, too.

Law school like hard majors, they also like to to see diversity of interests.
So to maximise the chance I would recommend something like Biochemistry, or Physics. Get a Philosophy, or English minor as well.
If you get good grades this will look VERY impressive on your law school application.

Depending on what law you wish to practice, Business, Criminal Justice, or Political Science. Although my ex is a lawyer and she majored in anthropology (that blood sucker)

Political Science is probably your best route, but if you want a niche as a lawyer I would guess that you could be creative and do something different like botany or something
