I have a pet Emu here in America. I'm wondering what types of food I should feed him? He is currently eating "sweet feed" designed for horses and seems to like it quite a bit. Is there anything else that he would prefer (something he would naturally find in Australia? )

Emus will eat a feed called "Ratite feed". However, you must be careful when buying feed for emus or any other ratites, especially at a young age. Make sure the feed is fresh and in-date. Once you purchase the feed, stick to the same brand. This is very important mostly at a young age. If you have young emus (under 6 months) You should feed them ratite grower. If you cannot find the ratite feed, then you can use the turkey/game finisher. DO NOT USE TURKEY STARTER at any age.
Turkey/game finisher is cheaper and seems to agree with these birds. As a snack, they love apples sliced thin, grapes, and other fruits.. I have also seen Rocky the Emu eat scrambled eggs, macaroni salad, potato salad, dog food.

The sweet feed is what i always fed my emus. I started them off on regular emu feed but found that the sweet feed would work as well. Give grass they love green grass. Once started on the grain u need 2 leave the emu on the grain, if it ever looses weight then it is next to impossible 2 put weight back on them again. Sounds as if u are doing just fine.

Emu's eat ratite feed that you should be able to find any place there that sells farm animal type feed. They also like fruit, like cut up apples or grapes, and will eat insects. We raised rheas that eat about the same as Emu do.

there is an Emu farm in Trivandrum, you will get the address in case you write to “Karshakashree” magazine or the “Karshakan”, magazine, Kottayam, Kerala. yet so a techniques as i understand you may purely wish to sell the chicks to potential farm proprietors which will attain saturation component quickly. there will be no longer many takers for Emu meat in India.

These ratite feeds (flightless birds) can be ordered through your local feed store.
