lan was correct.. GP If you say it phonetically it says "Jeep" If memory serves, they were originally made by a company called American General Corp? The US Army commissioned them to design and build the vehicle.

The guys are right. It comes from "GP" General Purpose vehicle. Kind of like how the military HUMMV is now a HUMMER.
