empty cookies folder temp and temporary Internet files
search easiest way
or use clean up utility
all programs, accessories, system tools, disc cleanup
you could also change the colour quality from 32 bit to 16 bit or 12 bit
remove all unwanted programs
i will assume you have virus software and a no adware program
which you update and use regularly
a program like regseeker will clean the registry for you

Take a look at this article, it helped me. Perhaps you can find some other information in that same website. Hope this helps.

** Beginning of the article **
Basic maintenance of a computer

Perhaps you have noticed many times that your computer is becoming slower. This is usually due to a lack of proper maintenance.

Installing and uninstalling software

The first important point about this is that you should be careful with the software you install in your computer. Years ago, when computers worked with a command line, installing software was as easy as copying every file to your computer and they modifying the configuration file. Nowadays, however, installing software creates registry entries in your computer's operative system; therefore, the more programs you install, the more registry entries you will have in them.

Does having lots of registry entries affect your computer performance? Theoretically, it does not. Anyway, it is always better to know the registry entries do not disappear when you uninstall the software. This is why it is important to be sure you know what are you installing in your computer.

To uninstall a software you should use that software's uninstall routine. It is not correct to simply erase the files because the registry entries will not be updated and that could mislead the computer to give you error messages.

When finishing the uninstallation, you can check the folder in which the program was stored in order to erase any residue the uninstall routine may have left.

The dilemma of temporary files

Computers are machines that, as we mentioned on a previous article, work using the available space in memory and disks. However, the computer does not use the files stored in the disks to work: it makes copies (temporary files) of the files it needs to work. Well, many programs do not erase these temporary files they created but leave them in your disks. Therefore, the space in your disks is reduced. You shuld look for these temporary files and delete them regularly.

Do not format your disk

Even if a virus has gotten into your computer, most problems have a solution without needing to erase or format al your hard disk. Talk to a technician or use a live-cd version of Linux and use its programs to solve your problem.

Getting rid of the garbage

As time goes by, you will notice your computer will be filling up with files: documents you made, things you downloaded from your e-mail, etcetera. Are you sure you have got your information well organized? Here some things to think about:

› Are there files you can combine? your letters, for example?
› Can you identify the contento of a file by its name?
› Did you erase your drafts?
› Have you ever heard about .mp3pro format? It occupies less space.
› Are your folders really well organized?
› Have you got backup copies of your files?

If you can keep an order in your computer, you will save time and you will work better.

Last part

Ironic or not, other thing you must be concerned about is the physical space where you work in. a computer is a delicate machine and it is sensitive to damage caused by dust or humidity. Try to keep your computer in a clean ventilated place, with an appropriate light. It will help you a little longer if you do.

Just defragmenting ur drives doesn't answer for a decent startup
All u have to do is :

1 Click on Start
2. Click on Run
3. Type "msconfig" without quotes
4. Go to the "Start up tab"
5. Start unchecking programs on this list that you think you don't need running.
6. i would do just a few at a time,
7. Restart8. See if the computer is running okay.
clearing tempraoary net files may also help

-->Too many programmes on your machine will slow it down.
--> You may need a new laptop, depending on its age.

Also, try taking all the files & programme links off your desktop, and putting them in a folder in your mydocs.

Another thing to try, is look in the bottom right hand corner of your screen - the task bar. If there are lots of icons there, that means lots of programmes loading (probably as you boot.) Try going into some of their options, and stop them from booting.

Also run an anti-virus programmes scan, and a anti-spyware programe. Anti virus, try AVG Free( http://free.grisoft.com/ ), and anti spyware, try Spybot Search and Destroy( http://www.safer-networking.org ).

Hope that helps.

Go buy Ad-Aware SE Personal. It scans all your computers files (and i mean all!) and then gives you a list of the files which could be effecting your computers performance, and then you can choose to delete them. It takes time to scan but is well worth the time and money, my computer kept freezing and going slow all the time and now it works like I just bought it from PC World!!If that doesnt work, i dont know what will.
